US Coast Guard establishes new autonomous programme office to include C-UAS

The US Coast Guard has established the Initial Operating Capability of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Program Executive Office (PEO). which will include counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) capabilities.

This PEO is a component of the Service’s Force Design 2028 plan, aimed at integrating capabilities. The RAS PEO is dedicated to the rapid operationalisation of the Coast Guard’s Unmanned Systems Strategic Plan.

“The establishment of a separate PEO is the most efficient mechanism to translate the evolving technology landscape into fielded capabilities – including Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) – and allows for dedicated advocacy for resources,” the Coast Guard said in an August 20 statement.

Advancing the Coast Guard’s C-UAS strategy is a central part of the effort. “The RAS PEO will facilitate the Coast Guard’s efforts to forge the C-UAS doctrine, partnerships and capabilities necessary to defend the U.S. Marine Transportation System and safeguard National Special Security Events,” the Coast Guard said.

The PEO’s responsibilities span the full capability lifecycle, including requirements definition and prioritisation, managing acquisition and contracting, overseeing system development and integration, managing fielding and deployment, developing sustainment plans and collaborating with stakeholders. A temporary implementation team comprised of subject matter experts and supporting personnel has been created.

In July, the Coast Guard published a request for information seeking insight into the current capabilities of C-UAS, the availability of C-UAS as a service (contractor-owned, contractor-operated), and the availability of C-UAS equipment operated by the government but owned and maintained by the vendor (contractor-owned, government-operated). This request has now closed.
