The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) is seeking companies to submit proposals for laser defence weapons to protect land vehicles. The tender requirements includes:
- Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) system (effector, power, cooling, sensor) to destroy small UAS at ranges of 1km+
- Availability to deliver within 12 months ideally
- System to be hosted on a land vehicle platform
- UK system content to be declared – 50% by value and above expected
- Total budget up to UKP20 million for multiple systems
- Collaboration between industry partners to form a solution welcomed
Testing range/facilities to be provided by government, as a demonstration of systems would be required as part of any procurement. Contract dates (estimated) are1 August 2025 to 31 March 2026
According to the MOD tender document:
“This notice is for the Authority to understand the current state of the market of LDEW systems in the land environment. The description is deliberately high level and outcome based, so as not to unduly limit the use cases or technologies to which responses might refer. The Authority wishes to understand the current maturity, performance, cost, and availability of LDEW systems to be operated in counter UAS roles. The authority intends to hold 1-2-1 sessions with interested suppliers who hold the appropriate level of security clearance between 16/06/2025 – 11/07/2025, however there may be scope to hold a market engagement day dependant on the level of response received from interested partied.
