Four airports in Poland, including Warsaw’s Chopin and Modlin airports, have closed after reports that Russian drones have entered the country’s airspace, according to the Reuters news agency.
NATO and Polish fighter jets were scrambled as Russia launched an attack on Ukrainian regions close to the border with Poland. According to a BBC report, Polish police say they have found a damaged drone in Czosnówka, a village in eastern Poland, about 40km (25 miles) from the border with Belarus at 5:40 am (4:40 BST).
According to a statement from Poland’s defence ministry:
“As a result of today’s attack by the Russian Federation on Ukrainian territory, an unprecedented violation of Polish airspace by drones occurred. This act of aggression posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens. The regions most at risk were the Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin Voivodeships. Upon the order of the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces, defensive procedures were immediately initiated. Polish and allied radar systems tracked several objects that violated airspace. Considering those that could pose a threat, the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces decided to neutralize them. The drones that could have posed a threat were shot down. Search and rescue operations are underway to identify the locations of possible impacts.”
