Gulf drone war report March 11 – Iran expands attacks with new targets, drones and missiles

Iran has intensified its Shahed drone attacks across the Gulf in the last few days, using a combination of drones and ballistic missiles.

According to a March 11 press release from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), posted on the Mehr news agency website: “The thirty-seventh wave of Operation True Promise-4 was carried out with the most severe and heavy attacks against positions of aggressors which was unprecedented since the outbreak of war. The IRGC launched the heaviest attacks against the positions of the US and Israeli regime on the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of First Imam of All Believers, Imam Ali (AS), using “Khorramshahr” missile,” said the news report. “Iranian forces pounded the US bases in the region and Israel positions with highly-sophisticated missiles, in which, a satellite communications centre in southern Tel Avivi was targeted for the second time.  In addition, the Iranian armed forces targeted the military centres in Haifa along with US Fifth Naval Base in Erbil of Iraq severely.”

According to the BBC news website three cargo vessels have been hit by “unknown projectiles” in the Strait of Hormuz, with no confirmation of casualties.  Saudi Arabia reported it had shot down two Iranian drones heading towards an oil field, and six ballistic missiles aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base. Four people were reported injured after two drones fell near Dubai International Airport, the second time the airport has been impacted in five days.

“A security source has reported that multiple unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted and brought down, while other drones struck fuel storage tanks at the Port of Salah,” said Oman’s new agency. “No casualties have been reported. The relevant authorities are deploying all available resources to monitor and counter these malicious attacks, in steadfast commitment to preserving the safety of the nation, its citizens and residents.”

Iran has launched a new wave of missiles targeting cities in Israel including Tel Aviv and Haifa. The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday morning that the missiles fired at Israel were either intercepted or landed in uninhabited areas. Meanwhile, Israel said on Wednesday that it had launched its own “wide-scale wave” of strikes targeting regime infrastructure in Iran.

According to the Kyiv Independent: “A Saudi Arabian arms company has signed a deal to buy Ukrainian-made interceptor missiles, the Kyiv Independent has learned, with one source within Ukraine’s defense industry saying that Riyadh and Kyiv are negotiating a separate “huge deal” for arms that could be finalized this week.”

An analyst with Army Recognition has reported that the latest attacks have seen the use of an electric variant of the Iranian Shahed-101 loitering munition, “which has previously appeared in several operational theaters and reflects the expansion of Iran’s strategy centered on low-cost kamikaze drones designed for saturation attacks and medium-range tactical missions,” said the report.,,,The use of relatively inexpensive drones to trigger expensive interceptor launches has become a recurring operational pattern in both the Ukrainian and Iranian wars.”
