GRIFO C-UAS and SAMP/T air defence systems delivered to Italian army

The Italian defence ministry reports the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Command (COMACA) has received its first SAMP/T New Generation (NG) and GRIFO surface-to-air missile weapon systems.

The GRIFO, developed and produced by MBDA in Italy as part of a programme launched in 2019, integrates the new CAMM-ER missile, is a short range air defence system capable of engaging fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft (including drones), cruise missiles and anti-radar missiles.

According to Undersecretary of State for Defense, Senator Isabella Rauti: “Today here we are taking a step forward in the ‘Italian system’ on the tracks of ‘national security’ and ‘defence of the future,’ headed toward a shared goal: the national ecosystem….Intercepting and neutralizing third-dimensional threats—this is the goal of our new missile systems—and moving toward the creation of an “Italian space shield” means strengthening the resilience of infrastructure and systems, safeguarding information processes, countering disinformation, and protecting citizens from hostile campaigns aimed at weakening institutions and social stability. It means building defensive deterrence and national security.”

According to the ministry:

“Following the acquisition of the SKYNEX system, with the first unit delivered to the Italian Army last December, the air defence systems renewal program continues, and the Armed Forces takes a further step in the process of modernizing their capabilities, adopting advanced technologies designed to increase the effectiveness and safety of soldiers on the battlefield.”
