Belgium receives Piorun air defence systems

Belgium’s Special Operations Regiment has received its first Piorun air defence systems. The portable and mobile system is designed for deployment by small units, providing protection against drones, attack helicopters and low-altitude aircraft.

The delivery is a result of a May 2025 declaration of intent agreement with Poland, which supplies the Piorun. Belgium has purchased 40 Piorun systems as part of the collaboration.

The Belgian Ministry of Defence is currently strengthening its capacity to detect and neutralise drones and other low-flying threats. In addition to the Piorun, the Ministry of Defence uses the SAAB Giraffe 1X mobile radar for a clear aerial image and early detection of suspicious air activity and the DroneShield Immediate Response Kits for quick intervention. If the situation requires it, a drone can also be physically neutralised with a specially adapted SX4 shotgun.
