FAA expands drone flight authorisation programme to include recreational flyers

Starting from 23 July, recreational drone operators in the US gain access to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Low Altitude Authorisation and Capability (LAANC) system. Previously recreational flyers wishing to operate in controlled airspace could only do so at fixed sites. LAANC is a collaboration between the FAA and industry developed to support the safe integration of unmanned systems into the nation’s airspace. It expedites the time it takes for a drone pilot to receive authorization to fly under 400 feet in controlled airspace and shows airspace operators where authorised drones are flying near airports. The service is already used by hundreds of commercial pilots who operate under the FAA’s small drone rule (PDF) (Part 107).
