Korea Post develops UTM system, will start remote mail drone deliveries in 2021

South Korea’s Chosun news service (http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2018/08/09/2018080901534.html) reports that Korea Post will launch drone deliveries to islands and mountainous areas in 2021.

The news service reports that the postal agency will develop its own UAS traffic management system and that training will start for up to 2,000 agency employees from next year.

In the initial pilot programme, says the agency, trials will take place in Taean, South Chungcheong Province this month in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

In an initial demonstration programme the postal agency delivered mail from  a post office in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province to the Byeolmaro astronomical observatory on Mount. Bongnae, 780 m above sea level. It would normally take 30 minutes to reach the observatory but the drone flew to its destination in just six minutes, say press reports.
