The 3rd edition of ISO 21384-3, the international standard for safe commercial uncrewed aerial system (UAS) operations, has been published by ISO/TC 20/SC 16.
The document specifies the requirements for safe commercial operations, including the external safety-critical service providing command and control (C2) link. The standard applies to all commercial UAS regardless of size, application or location and represents the international best practice for the safe commercial operation of any UAS.
Filippo Tomasello, Senior Advisor at Unifly Consulting, is the convenor of the working group that developed the standard. The company said in a LinkedIn post that the standard structures requirements around the Open, Specific and Certified Categories; introduces detailed medical fitness requirements for remote pilots and other operational personnel; defines the roles and tasks of different types of visual observers; introduces the role of the fleet manager, building on concepts developed through the EU-funded Flying Forward 2020 project, in which Unifly Consulting was a partner; and accommodates different levels of automation, including fully autonomous UAS operations.
